Olly Cherry Selected as 2025 ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵScholar
Hamilton, Bermuda - August 21, 2025
¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ the P&C and specialty risk division of AXA SA (“AXA”), today announced that the 2025 ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵScholarship has been awarded to Bermudian university student Oliver (aka Olly) Cherry.
The ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵScholarship is a full scholarship awarded to students pursuing an undergraduate degree in (re)insurance industry related studies.
Olly is majoring in Business and Political Economy with a concentration in Economics and Public Policy at Tulane University in the US. He plans to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in 2029 and pursue a career in Bermuda’s re/insurance sector that involves “roles that sit at the intersection of risk, climate, and public impact: helping to build policies and products that serve both the private sector and the public good”.
Olly graduated from Suffield Academy in Connecticut with a Cumulative GPA of 3.86, including a Senior Year GPA of 4.05. Prior to that he attended Somersfield Academy in Bermuda where he completed the Middle Years Program of the International Baccalaureate.
In addition to his academic accomplishments, 18-year-old Olly has already built a reputation as a local entrepreneur and an advocate of the environment. As Vice President & Communications Manager of the Rotary Interact Club at Somersfield Academy, he was instrumental in starting a community garden with produce donated to a local food bank; and he was one of the main organizers of many fundraisers, including raising funds for the Salvation Army’s Christmas toys drive and for the Puerto Rico hurricane fund. As Co-President of Suffield Academy’s EFFECT Environmental Club, Suffield’s environmental activism group, he led purchasing audit, eco-friendly choice incentivisation and speaker initiatives to reduce waste and raise environmental literacy across the campus. This included initiating a reusable cup incentivise program that significantly reduced single-use-plastic usage. Olly also captained Suffield’s Track and Cross-Country teams.
Recently, Olly designed and launched Bermuda Your Way – a tourism website to innovatively help small businesses stand out online through curated itineraries.
Olly has also been a member of the Bermuda Government’s National Youth Policy Advisory Board. In this capacity, he has contributed to the development of policy briefs presented to Cabinet; and ensured fiscal alignment and compliance with Bermuda’s National Youth Strategy.
Additionally, Olly has represented Bermuda overseas as a Youth Delegate at the COP28 United Nations Climate Conference in Dubai, UAE, where he participated in international discussions on climate resilience and sustainability in small island states, and at the World Schools Debate Championships in Vietnam where he argued policy topics from trade to judicial reform, and was awarded “Best Overall Speaker” by the Bermuda Debate Society.
Other awards and recognition that Olly has received include Senior School National Debate Champion from the Bermuda Debate Society, Youth Climate Ambassador Award from the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, and Teen Services Bermuda’s Most Outstanding Teen Award in the Hospitality Category.
¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵScholarship Committee Chairperson Carol Parker Trott said: “We are pleased to announce Olly Cherry as the 2025 ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵScholar. We received a record number of applicants this year – about double the number that we normally see. This made the selection process twice as hard as many were high calibre candidates. Olly’s intellectual curiosity, ingenuity, and maturity stood out during the interviews with shortlisted candidates. He embodies the characteristics of a scholar. We look forward to supporting him as he navigates his educational journey and career choices in the insurance industry.”
